Android's next visual change has been leaked early. Google has published a blog post about its new Material 3 Expressive style too early. This more colorful, more accessible, and more modern design could transform the look of many apps.
Interface changes in Android are often incremental, but this time, Google is preparing something much more visible. As the Google I/O 2025 conference approaches, the company accidentally posted a blog post detailing the foundations of its future design dubbed Material 3 Expressive. This new style aims to make apps more dynamic, easier to understand, and visually engaging.
The article, spotted, then archived, and relayed by 9to5Google, gives us a detailed look at this redesign before the official announcement. It all started with a question posed in 2022 by a Google intern: why do all Material Design apps look so similar? This thought process launched three years of research, 46 separate studies, and more than 18,000 participants. The result: a system designed to be both aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Google claims that this "expressive" design improves readability, highlights important actions, and creates a better emotional connection with the user.
Material 3 Expressive adds new, more visible colors, shapes, and buttons to Android
According to Google, tests show impressive results: +34% perception of modernity, +32% association with youth culture, and +30% feeling of innovation. The expressive interface would also draw more attention to key elements on the screen. For example, the "Send" button in an email app becomes larger, more visible, and easier to reach, reducing the time to act. Other concepts show a floating bar at the bottom of the screen or accent colors to better guide the user.
However, Google insists: this design will not be suitable for all applications. A music app could benefit from it, but not necessarily a banking app. The blog post also offers advice for developers: follow accessibility standards, stay focused on user needs, and never sacrifice functionality for style. The Material 3 Expressive will be detailed at Google I/O 2025, where Android 16 will also be presented, but this leak already reveals its ambition: a more human design, bolder and more useful.
