At its Google I/O conference, the Mountain View company unveiled a new step in the evolution of its home automation ecosystem. Gemini will now be at the heart of Google Home.
Create routines with simple phrases and let Gemini do the rest
The search giant has undertaken an overhaul of the automation tools in Google Home. With Gemini, creating a routine is no longer done through a series of actions to configure, but simply by explaining what you need.
Among the new features, we find:
- Suggested Automations: the AI observes your equipment and suggests useful routines (for example, turning on the outdoor light when the sun sets).
- Conversation-Assisted Creation: you formulate an intention ("I want the living room light to turn on by itself when I come home in the evening."), Gemini then generates a complete automation.
- Smart Triggers: triggers conditioned by real-world elements, such as morning rain that postpones automatic watering of the garden, for example.
A widget to monitor your home and smarter cameras
Google is also preparing a new “Summary” widget, initially reserved for Pixel smartphones. It will display contextual information without having to open the Google Home app: status of the robot vacuum, delivery alerts, room temperature, etc. It will adjust its content according to the time of day. At night, it could indicate whether the security system is activated or remind you if a door has been left open.
Finally, Google intends to unify the user experience for all products compatible with the Google Home API. From now on, all Nest camera features, including those powered by Gemini, will be accessible to third-party manufacturers. This includes searching video history by simply asking questions naturally, automatic descriptions of detected events, or even more precise alerts.
For example, you could ask: "Did the kids leave their bikes in the driveway this morning?" and receive the corresponding video clips directly.
