Google is working on an AI mode integrated directly into its search engine. This will support the Live feature, which already impressed us with Gemini.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Google was planning to integrate an AI mode into its search engine. The company is aware that chatbots and assistants boosted by artificial intelligence threaten traditional web search tools and is adapting to meet user demand and avoid losing market share.

After an initial internal testing phase, this new feature has begun to be tested externally, but still within a very closed circle. Android Authority has however managed to activate the future AI mode of Google Search in version 16.17.38.sa.arm64 beta of the Google application. It is not available to the public, but the media outlet was able to force the system's hand and offers us a first glimpse of the experience offered on Android mobile.

Live invites itself into the AI mode of Google Search

We first notice that Google is emphasizing its Live function, which allows to interact naturally with AI by voice. The Live icon is displayed below the input field, alongside the voice dictation icon and Google Lens. It's clear that the company is really pushing this feature. We also note that Google wants Live to become its own brand, independent of Gemini, which is never mentioned in this AI mode for Google Search.

The settings for customizing the Live experience of Google Search's AI mode are currently quite limited. It is possible to choose your primary language, as well as add secondary languages. Four different voices are available, and there is also the option to only display the query results on the screen, without having them read aloud. We imagine that additional options will be added with future updates.

Android Authority believes that what it has been able to test so far is quite functional and hopes to see AI mode and its Live feature arrive in Google Search in the public testing phase soon. The Google I/O 2025 conference, which is being held on May 20 and 21, may be the opportunity to learn more about this.
