Barely two weeks after the official announcement of the release of GTA 6 in May 2026, discussions around a possible new delay are already resurfacing. An article by Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) has reignited the debate, citing concerns that persist internally within some studios.
A release that seems far from being set in stone for GTA 6?
The launch of GTA 6 is expected to be one of the biggest video game events of the decade. This is precisely what makes it a source of stress for many publishers and even a certain form of panic. Several studios have reportedly already delayed their own titles to avoid any direct confrontation with Rockstar's game. An anonymous developer quoted by Schreier, for example, explains that his team has pushed back its multiplayer game from late 2025 to early 2026. Officially for production reasons, but also "to distance ourselves from GTA 6."
But as Jason Schreier points out, there is at this stage "no guarantee that May 2026 is a certainty" for GTA 6. This statement is enough to fuel speculation, especially since Rockstar has already changed its plans in the past. If another delay were to occur, it would likely be aimed at fine-tuning the game and avoiding a rushed launch. From a business perspective, this could also push GTA 6 back to the end of 2026, or even beyond, a possibility that worries some publishers, but which remains, for the moment, a scenario.
A fixed release date... for now
For now, Rockstar is officially maintaining its May 26 release date. The opening of wish lists on platforms and the precision of the announced date suggest that the publisher is confident. But in a context where the slightest change can disrupt an entire ecosystem, the entire industry remains on alert. One thing is certain: GTA 6 continues to dominate discussions well before its release. And until the May 2026 date is set in stone, studios, like players, will proceed with caution. And a certain form of panic will be present among professionals.
