This week, the release of the trailer for GTA VIcaptivated a good portion of the attention of video game fans. The highly anticipated new Rockstar title also has an official release date, which was certainly not chosen at random.
GTA 6: The Hidden References Behind the Release Date
While Grand Theft Auto Vwill celebrate its twelfth anniversary next September, fans of the famous Rockstar franchise are still desperately awaiting the sixth installment in the saga. First announced for late 2025, the game has finally been pushed back to May 26, 2026. In the wake of this bad news, which can be explained by Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar's desire to release a fully finalized game that meets fans' expectations, a second trailer was released on YouTube - the first since December 2023 - and broke all audience records. The sixth installment will center on a criminal couple, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, who will unwittingly find themselves plunged into a large-scale conspiracy that affects the entire state of Leonida.
The title is obviously generating a lot of buzz; and while the postponement of its release date has undoubtedly caused great disappointment among the most impatient fans, the date of May 26, 2026 was not chosen at random. Indeed, this anniversary date seems to refer to two important events, one of which is linked to the meta of the license. First of all, the presence of a couple as protagonists immediately refers to Bonnie and Clyde, two bandits specialized in bank robberies during the Great Depression. Heroes of several films dedicated to them, the star-crossed lovers died under the bullets of the federal police on June 23, 1934. Three days later, on May 26, Bonnie was buried; the next day, it was Clyde's turn to enter his final resting place. The choice of May 26th therefore appears to be a nod to the criminal couple who inspired the characters of Jason and Lucia.
But this may not be the only homage hidden behind this release date... Indeed, as French videographer Captain Popcorn points out in a video dedicated to the hidden references in the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI. On May 26, 2022, American actor Ray Liotta, known in particular for his masterful role in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, but also in The Many Saints of Newark - the prequel film to the cult series The Sopranos - has passed away in his sleep. The actor was closely linked to the Grand Theft Auto saga, having lent his voice and appearance to Tommy Vercetti, the main character in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which has been one of the most popular games in the franchise since its release in 2002.
