While Rockstar announced the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6, much to the dismay of fans who were hoping to play it this fall, the studio has just achieved this historic record with its next game and its parent company, Take Two Interactive, is confident about the new release date for GTA 6.
Rockstar has been working on GTA 6 for a very long time
If you were eagerly awaiting the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 and thought you could play it this fall, Rockstar announced some bad news a few days ago. Indeed, GTA 6 has been postponed and will be released on May 26, 2026. This opus will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
This Thursday, May 15, 2025, Rockstar's parent company, Take Two Interactive, unveiled its fiscal results. This was an opportunity to obtain interesting information about the next installment of the cult franchise. Thus, we learned that the game has been in development for many years. The CEO of Take Two Interactive stated that the teams started working on GTA 6 right after the release of Red Dead Redemption II in 2018 and that its active development began in 2020.
GTA 6 sets a historic record in the video game industry
And that's not all: Rockstar has just set a historic record in the video game industry. Indeed, GTA 6 is the most expensive video game in the history of entertainment with an estimated development cost of one billion dollars! According to our colleagues at IGN, this announced amount is based on the fact that the total development of the title should last 8/9 years according to Zelnick's statements. An investment that may seem incredible but which is likely to be profitable very quickly. As a reminder, with GTA 5, a billion dollars were brought in in 3 days and to date, since its release in September 2013, the game has generated more than 10 billion dollars.
Take Two reassures fans, GTA 6 will be released in May 2026
Finally, a few months ago, Strauss Zelnick gave an interview in which he expressed himself confident about the release of GTA 6 in the fall of 2025. Now, the release has been pushed back to May 26, 2026, and some are wondering if Rockstar is going to push that date back even further. Take Two's CEO has once again expressed confidence about this goal, telling IGN:
I think historically, when we set a specific date, we're generally very successful in meeting it.
While this statement is intended to be reassuring, it's worth noting that Bloomberg announced that the new release date is not certain and that GTA 6 could still be delayed. We just have to wait, only time will tell.
