GTA 6 won't be released until May 2026. But behind the scenes, Rockstar Games is preparing a real gaming earthquake. A series of recently spotted patents reveals the studio's crazy ambitions. The goal: to push all the boundaries of open-world gaming. And the least we can say is that it promises to be monumental.
Finally credible NPCs for GTA 6?
The first notable point is the non-player characters. According to the filed documents, Rockstar wants them to move smoothly, naturally, and above all, believably. No more rigid pedestrians and drivers who panic for no reason. Thanks to a system based on a network of virtual roads, NPCs could react intelligently to their surroundings.
And that's not all for GTA 6. Animations would now be "data-driven." In short, characters would automatically adapt to situations, without the need for predefined scripts. There's also talk of an AI capable of predicting body movements via motion capture. Enough to make each interaction more lively and less predictable. A far cry from what we know about GTA 5.
A visual rendering that impresses
Rockstar doesn't plan on skimping on the graphics of GTA 6 either. Several patents describe a rendering system capable of managing a constant level of detail. As a result, whether you're near or far from a building, everything will remain clear and consistent. No more blurry textures from a distance. The game's lighting and overall fluidity will also be improved. The goal is clear: to deliver a rich, beautiful, and fluid open world. All without compromising performance. And on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, it's promising.
Another interesting advancement for GTA 6 is loading times. Rockstar wants to reduce them as much as possible, especially in online mode. Changing sessions or joining friends could become almost instantaneous. A real plus for immersion. A new microtransaction management system is also in development. Smoother, more secure, and coupled with reinforced anti-cheat mechanisms. Everything would work thanks to hidden variables, invisible to players. A good way to protect the experience without weighing down the gameplay.
Of course, all these patents may not end up in the final version of the game. But they clearly show the direction Rockstar is taking. GTA 6 won't just be a sequel. It aims to redefine what an open world can offer.
