Between manual tests, approximate dosage calculations, and constant doubts about the reliability of analyses, it's easy to waste time... or do things wrong. It's precisely to solve this headache that the iopool EcO was created. This small floating analyzer, designed by a Belgian start-up, aims to simplify the daily lives of pool and spa owners. And to take the experience even further, a Wi-Fi relay completes the device, offering real-time remote monitoring. We tested this connected solution, and here's what it's really worth.
A design that doesn't look like much
This small cylindrical pebble (22 cm / 150 g), with its neat plastic finish, is simply placed in the pool water, where it floats discreetly. No cables, no complicated box to install: just activate it via the dedicated mobile app (available on iOS and Android) and let it do its job. The operation takes less than five minutes, watch in hand. The only constraint: shake it lightly to activate the internal probes before putting it in the water.
The heart of the system is based on three integrated sensors, capable of continuously measuring the water temperature, its pH and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). This last parameter is essential: it allows you to estimate the disinfecting power of the water, by evaluating the quantity of oxidizing agents (such as chlorine or bromine). The iopool EcO stands out for the regularity of its readings and a rather simple application (perhaps a little too simple). With each measurement, you get a simple, but precise, summary of the water quality. And above all, you receive concrete recommendations, personalized according to the volume of the pool and the products used.
This is one of the great assets of the iopool ecosystem: the application does not just say "be careful, the pH is too low." It explains why, how to fix it, and with which product, indicating precisely the quantity to add. It even takes into account the stocks available in your cupboard, if you have entered the products in your possession. This “intelligent assistant” aspect is very appreciable, especially for less experienced users. You can also buy products directly from the store via a dedicated tab in the app.
An essential Wi-Fi companion
But for this promise to really work on a daily basis, you need to be able to access the sensor data at any time. However, the iopool EcO only communicates via Bluetooth by default. This means that, without a Wi-Fi relay, you need to be near the pool to trigger a synchronization. This is where the relay comes in: connected to your Internet box, it acts as a link between the sensor and the iopool cloud. From then on, there is no need to take out your phone next to the pool: you can monitor the readings from the office, on vacation or even on the other side of the world. Installing this relay is again very simple: just plug it into an electrical outlet near the pool (and ideally sheltered), connect it to the Wi-Fi network, and off you go.
Over the days, the iopool app traces a real history of the water quality. You can visualize temperature increases, disinfectant drops, critical periods, etc. This not only allows you to react quickly, but also to anticipate treatments before imbalances become problematic. During heat waves or after heavy rain, this tool becomes particularly valuable.
Reliable results
During our test, the sensor proved to be very reliable, with measurements that were consistent with those obtained via strips or from the Flipr that we also have in the pool. The time savings are undeniable, and the peace of mind provided by the Wi-Fi relay is a real plus. We also appreciate the ability to manually add measurements (via a tab test) or actions in the app, such as a one-off manual product addition, in order to keep a complete record of maintenance.
Please note that the iopool EcO is not compatible with all treatment systems. It is optimized for pools using chlorine (tablets, liquid, or tablets) or bromine. For pools using salt electrolysis or active oxygen, you will need to purchase the EcO Salt version. Similarly, while the Wi-Fi relay provides real convenience, it represents a significant additional cost compared to the Bluetooth-only version (+59 euros). Finally, the sensor must be recalibrated approximately every year, and its battery life is stated to be 2 to 3 seasons, after which the probe must be replaced.
iopool has created a well-designed connected solution with the EcO, a cross between a smart sensor and a personal assistant. Combined with its Wi-Fi relay, it transforms pool maintenance into a light, efficient, and reassuring routine. A great success, especially for individuals who want to keep their water clean all the time, without spending hours on it.
The iopool EcO is available from 249 euros (299 euros with the Wi-Fi relay), and the iopool EcO Salt at 349 euros (Wi-Fi relay included).
