Apple intends to pull out all the stops for the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027. According to indiscretions from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the Cupertino giant is indeed preparing for a "monumental year" that will shake up its product lineup.
The folding iPhone is finally here
First of all, Apple is reportedly using its phone's anniversary to announce its very first folding iPhone. According to the source, this highly anticipated device "should be on the market by 2027". It would be distinguished from the Android competition by an invisible crease in the middle of the screen. On all folding smartphones on the market, we can see an unsightly crease in the middle of the display panel, although manufacturers have gradually managed to reduce it.
This iPhone with a folding screen could be announced at the end of next year, alongside the iPhone 18, and arrive on the market for the smartphone's 20th anniversary a few months later. According to the latest news, the folding iPhone would be built around a titanium chassis and could cost more than $2,000.
In 2027, Apple would also launch a curved iPhone made mainly of glass. It would stand out thanks to a completely borderless screen, without a notch or hole. This high-end iPhone will "mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone X," which paved the way for "all-glass iPhone models."
AI and Smart Glasses
The renaissance Mark Gurman mentioned isn't limited to iPhones. That same year, Apple is expected to release a series of products powered by generative artificial intelligence, starting with smart glasses. Intended to rival Meta's smart Ray-Bans, the glasses would rely on cameras to understand and interact with the wearer's environment.
The glasses would rely entirely on Apple Intelligence, Apple's suite of AI tools, and on the Visual Intelligence function. Tim Cook's group is currently working on a dedicated chip, designed exclusively for glasses. At the same time, Apple is reportedly continuing to develop glasses dedicated to augmented reality, but they won't be released anytime soon.
At the same time, Apple is also reportedly launching new AirPods and Apple Watches that will be powered by AI. Through cameras, these products will also be able to benefit from Visual Intelligence. According to Mark Gurman, 2027 will also be the year when the Apple Watch and AirPods will evolve with the help of AI. All of these products, including smart glasses, should benefit from the new Siri, which is finally expected to be rolled out this fall. By 2027, Apple is said to have further improved the voice assistant with "large language models."
Finally, Gurman points out that Apple is planning to launch a robotic arm powered by generative AI that would have "its own personality." It's unclear when Apple plans to launch the project, but the arm is said to be part of the brand's grand strategy to take the home automation and connected home market by storm. Along the same lines, Apple is also reportedly planning to offer a smart hub, halfway between the iPad and the HomePod. The release of this hybrid device has reportedly been postponed, likely until next year. The hub would indeed rely largely on the new Siri.
