It is now possible to repair an iPad yourself (but not all models)

Apple launched its self-service repair program in France at the end of 2022, eight months after the United States. Since then, the manufacturer has added new components and devices that can be repaired yourself, at least if you're brave enough to open and tinker with an iPhone or Mac! Beats products and Apple screens have joined the catalog of products supported by the Self Repair service.

Dear spare parts

Starting tomorrow, budding repairers will be able to take care of their faulty iPads. The program has added tablets to its list of conquests. This means that it will be possible to access repair manuals, genuine Apple parts, Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions, tools, and tool kits available for rental.

Be careful, however, not all iPads are covered by this service, far from it. Only iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16) are supported, meaning very recent models. Too bad: there are certainly tons of older tablets lying around in cupboards that just need a little surgery to get them back in service.

We can complain, but the fact remains that Apple offers a complete self-service repair service (the company was more or less pushed into this by regulators). However, replacement parts are charged at a high price: €99 for an iPhone 13 battery, without tools. It's cheaper to go through an Apple Store or an authorized repairer. Nevertheless, the service is there for those who want it. And it will launch in Canada this summer, making it the 34th country to benefit from this program.

At the same time, Apple provided details on its Genuine Parts Distributor program, which gives independent repairers without a direct relationship with Apple access to original spare parts. These providers can order screens, batteries, charging ports, and other iPhone components through third-party distributors MobileSentrix (US and Europe) and Mobileparts.shop (Europe). The program will expand to iPad parts tomorrow.
