“Monthly, Annual, Lifetime”: ChatGPT Considers New Paid Subscriptions

The monthly subscription to ChatGPT Plus, billed at $20, could soon see its family grow. Lines of code spotted in the latest version of the application suggest that monthly, annual, and even lifetime plans are under consideration.

New subscription plans for ChatGPT Plus?

Spotted by an X user known as M1, a code snippet present in version v1.2025.126 of ChatGPT suggests three new subscription options: monthly, annual, and even lifetime. This discovery comes at a time when the current business model relies heavily on a monthly plan at $20, a price that is dissuasive for some, especially students or occasional users.

A weekly subscription could appeal to these profiles: a temporary solution, at a reduced price, for a one-off need. A model that would also prove relevant for testing Premium features before committing more permanently. Conversely, the annual subscription, although absent from the current individual offer, is already offered in the Team and Enterprise versions, which suggests that an alignment would be logical in the long term.

A "lifetime" formula, really?

The possibility of a lifetime subscription for ChatGPT Plus raises more questions. If this offer were to exist, it would probably be very expensive, in order to anticipate the costs of the technological evolution of a generative AI service. The proposition could attract an ultra-loyal segment of users, but remains perilous for OpenAI, in a constantly changing sector.

Moreover, there is no guarantee of the sustainability of such a formula. It's difficult to predict what ChatGPT will be like in 5 or 10 years, as competition intensifies and uses evolve rapidly. This type of subscription, often reserved for more mature software, seems premature for such a young service.

For now, OpenAI hasn't made anything official. But the discovery of these text strings in the code at least confirms internal discussions on the evolution of the pricing model. For its part, Google is also reportedly working on new AI offerings for Google One, with annual payment options. The battle for AI subscriptions has only just begun.
