The least we can say is that we are living in a particularly strange time for the video game industry. Indeed, while it has always been customary for manufacturers to reduce the price of their consoles in the years following their release, this time we have been faced with the opposite situation. Whether it is the PS5 or the Xbox Series, all are now sold at a higher price than they were originally in 2020. And apparently, the same scenario could occur with the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Switch 2 could raise its prices in the future
This is indeed what Shuntaro Furukawa, the company's CEO, confirmed during a recent speech to investors. "If pricing assumptions change significantly, we will examine what price adjustments we can make and implement them after taking various factors into account," he said. This statement is all the more surprising given that the console's high price is already a source of debate among gamers.
Nevertheless, this could still take some time to happen. Because, as Furukawa also assured, Nintendo's immediate goal remains to sell as many consoles as possible as quickly as possible. "For now, the top priority is to quickly popularize the Switch 2," he assured. We should therefore be able to avoid a possible price increase during the first months, if not the first years of the machine's existence. Even if the ideal would obviously be to avoid it altogether.
The controversies keep coming
In any case, one thing is certain: Nintendo is certainly not going to calm the players' anger with this kind of statement. Because between the console's relatively high price, the launch of Mario Kart World at the mind-boggling price of €90, and finally the controversies linked to the physical versions that aren't really physical versions, there's reason to be worried. Let's hope this doesn't affect the success of the Switch 2, which is scheduled for launch on June 5. As a reminder, you can already find our first impressions of it.
