Huawei will have to do without Windows on its next laptops, replaced by its own solution, HarmonyOS. But with a little inventiveness, it will be possible to access Windows 11 on MateBooks.
Sanctioned by the United States and banned from using technologies (hardware or software) from it for years, Huawei has had to develop its own operating system, called HarmonyOS outside China, to replace Android on mobile devices. Until now, the manufacturer had managed to retain the right to preinstall Windows on its computers, but this has no longer been the case since March. Therefore, the brand's next laptops will be released with HarmonyOS.
We're also expecting the first Huawei laptop with HarmonyOS on May 19th. This model, probably a new MateBook Pro, will therefore not be delivered with Windows, even in Europe. But that doesn't mean it will be completely impossible to use Windows 11 on the device.
HarmonyOS arrives on Huawei laptops
A Chinese blogger relayed by MyDrivers explains that he has managed to run Windows 11 on a Huawei PC with HarmonyOS. He didn't reinvent the wheel, since he used a virtual machine tool to do so. According to him, he was able to use the third-party software OS-easy to easily access Microsoft's operating system on his device. This program allows the user to download Windows directly from Microsoft's official website or import ISO files via a USB drive.
Having access to Windows 11 through a virtual machine is, of course, different from having the OS natively installed on your computer. But for consumers who absolutely want a MateBook, while still being able to use Windows, this is an alternative to consider. Some applications you're used to using might not be compatible with HarmonyOS, hence the interest in such an option. But it's clear that without native Windows, Huawei laptops will lose a lot of appeal to users outside of China.
HarmonyOS still has some strengths to offer. In particular, it allows seamless interconnection between all devices, from smartphones to TVs, PCs, and smartwatches. Huawei also emphasizes the security aspect, while the system is efficient and less complicated than Windows.
