At the end of April, One Piece allowed us to discover the long-awaited rematch between Luffy, Captain Straw Hat, and Kizaru, Admiral Commander-in-Chief of the Navy. An epic fight that nevertheless attracted its share of criticism online, with fans condemning a certain "overanimation." Too many special and sound effects according to them, a point that Vincent Chansard, the French animator in charge of this scene, wanted to defend in an interview.
An "over-animation" in the fight between Luffy and Kizaru?
Episode 1127 of One Piece, soberly baptized "Luffy vs. Kizaru! A fierce kaleidoscopic battle", sees Luffy, the main protagonist of One Piece, face Kizaru, the cult Admiral of the Navy. But following the broadcast of this episode, several fans took to social networks to share their disappointments. According to the most common criticisms, the duel between Luffy and Kizaru is "overanimated." By this, we mean that too much is happening on screen, and it's difficult to grasp the entire sequence. An animation style that doesn't please everyone, we'll let you judge with a part of the fight visible just below.
This isn't the first time that a scene animated by Vincent Chansard has been the target of this kind of accusation. The fight between Sukuna and Mahoraga in season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen also received similar criticism. Recently, in an interview with the YouTube channel B.D.A. Law, Chansard justified the animation of the fight between Luffy and Kizaru. "I'm not sure what "over-animation" means... One is literally the sun god, and the other is literally light... What would be too much for something that's already so far beyond the boundaries of the imagination?" the animator defends himself.
This justification struck a chord with some skeptical fans, who were convinced by the animator. However, even though Chansard clarified the situation, the animation itself was only one of the duel's problems. For some, it was the sound. For others, the camera movements. Overall, the lack of readability and understanding of the fight was a negative point in this otherwise epic duel. It's hard to know where to sound the alarm. But one point on which fans and animators of One Piece agree is that the sound part of the anime deserves better: "Toei should urgently fire the One Piece sound team. This is not the work of professionals...." said Sota Shigetsugu, one of the animators of One Piece, visibly out of his mind.
Regardless, One Piece will not fail to thrill us through its upcoming duels. And even if Chansard's animation style is not unanimous, he has had the merit of finding himself some fervent fans over the years. Especially since the French animator is currently navigating between the various animes of the moment, it remains to be seen where he will drop his anchor next.
