RATP has very bad news for fraudsters

Fraud on Parisian transport is not a new phenomenon: the RATP estimates that there are more than 1.7 million violations annually, resulting in a loss of revenue estimated at several tens of millions of euros. Faced with this situation, the authority, supported by Île-de-France Mobilités, has decided to strike a major blow. Starting June 2, anyone caught without a valid ticket – whether on the metro, RER, bus, or tram – will be liable to a fine of €70 if they pay immediately, compared to €50 previously. This amount will increase to €120 if they pay within 90 days of the ticket being issued, and €180 after this deadline. This policy is accompanied by increased mobilization of control teams: between 400 and 600 agents will be deployed each day across the entire network to ensure the application of these new rules.

Fare increase and user discontent

This severity comes in the context of a major fare reform on the Ile-de-France transport network. Since January 1, 2025, the region has adopted simplified pricing: a single ticket at €2.50 for the metro, RER and trains, and €2 for the bus and tram, regardless of the distance traveled. Although this reform aims to make the offer more transparent, it has above all been accompanied by an overall price increase, which has angered many users, particularly Parisians.

Communication and education

Aware of the unpopularity of these measures, the RATP is accompanying the increase in fines with a vast poster campaign across the entire network, designed to warn and raise awareness among passengers. The company emphasizes the need to preserve the financial balance of the public service and points out that the fight against fraud benefits all users, by guaranteeing resources for the maintenance and development of the network.

Key points

  • Simplified fares, but on the rise: €2.50 for a metro/RER ticket, €2 for a bus/tram
  • Fine for fraud increased to €70 for immediate payment, €120 within 90 days, €18 thereafter
  • Measure accompanied by an information campaign and increased controls
