Star Wars Eclipse: Where did the game go?

Star Wars Eclipse: Where did the game go?

Few people still remember it, but in December 2021, during The Game Awards ceremony, Quantic Dream unveiled what would become one of the most ambitious games in the industry. Star Wars Eclipse was born. However, years have passed, and it's clear that no news has been shared since. So much so that many wonder if the project was simply aborted.

It would be tempting to think that. However, it's extremely false. Star Wars Eclipse is apparently still in development. We're taking advantage of May 4th, International Day dedicated to the Star Wars franchise, to clear our heads and recap everything we know so far about Star Wars Eclipse.

Still alive, still going strong

Last February, Quantic Dream finally deigned to give us some news, without much detail either. Guillaume de Fondaumière, the CEO of the French studio, stated that the project is progressing as planned, and is on schedule. In a message on LinkedIn, he explains: "We are fully committed to delivering and launching these innovative and high-quality titles in the future."

This doesn't tell us much about the progress of Star Wars Eclipse. After almost 4 years in development – at least from what we know – it's likely that the title will arrive on the market soon. We remind you that it is developed under Unreal Engine 5, a feat just a few years ago, which risks no longer being so innovative after the game's release, although still spectacular.

Images that are long overdue

All we have to sink our teeth into is the announcement trailer, all in CGI. Even to this day, it is one of our favorite game trailers. The staging, the music, and the ultra-photorealistic graphics transport us to a familiar galaxy, but one filled with secrets and mysteries. On the content side, Star Wars Eclipse should be an open-world game, with a multiplayer part. A style very different from what we expect from Quantic Dream and which will take the studio out of its comfort zone.

From what we know, Star Wars Eclipse will be set in the era of the High Republic. It takes place approximately 200 years before the arrival of Anakin Skywalker, in a time that could be called the Golden Age of the Jedi. While recent games and film productions have accustomed us to seeing the Jedi in particular difficulty, Star Wars Eclipse should transport us to a time when they are at the height of their glory and power. The High Republic has, however, already been the subject of a few books, with the comic The High Republic #1 and the novels Light of the Jedi and A Test of Courage.
