Fans have been waiting six years for a clear sequel to The Rise of Skywalker. And finally, Lucasfilm has just announced the first official story set after the last adventure. And no, it's not a movie, it's a novel that will continue the adventure! This story explores the consequences of the fall of the First Order, and above all, the fate of two iconic characters: Finn and Jannah.

After Exegol, the fight continues

The novel is titled Star Wars: The Last Order. The release is scheduled for October 21, 2025. The story begins shortly after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. The Resistance intercepts a ship filled with kidnapped children. These young people have actually been abducted by a First Order officer. His goal is to rebuild an army, using the same brainwashing methods as in the past.

Finn and Jannah then take the lead on a vital mission. They must hunt down this officer before he can start a new cycle of terror and manipulation.

Finn and Jannah face their past

What's interesting about this novel is that it delves into the pasts of the two former stormtroopers. As a reminder, both were victims of the First Order and both freed themselves through sheer force of will.

But this freedom comes at a price. They are often caught up in memories and doubts that resurface. Thus, in this quest to save other children, Finn and Jannah confront what they have been running from for years.

The First Order is still there

Contrary to what many thought, the end of Palpatine did not mark the total collapse of the First Order. Indeed, the Star Destroyer armada was destroyed and Exegol fell. But some high-ranking officers survived. And there are some who continue to operate in the shadows.

This would explain why the Resistance remains active, even after the final battle. Perhaps no stable government has yet emerged. Or perhaps the Resistance acts as an autonomous force, out of necessity.

Is Finn a Jedi in the making?

In The Rise of Skywalker, several clues suggested that Finn had some connection to the Force. He sensed danger and instinctively communicated with Rey.

So, this new novel could finally confirm what fans have long hoped for: to see Finn consciously wield the Force.

And why not Jannah? She, too, resisted conditioning. She, too, seems different. There are also theories that she might possess latent Force sensitivity.

This project was entrusted to Kwame Mbalia, a New York Times bestselling author. Known for his deep narratives and nuanced characters, Mbalia seems the perfect choice to tell such a story. This novel is not just a standalone work. It probably sets the stage for future film projects.
