This Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery has finally lifted the veil on the second trailer for James Gunn's Superman, the first feature film in the DCU he has been developing since 2022. The highly effective trailer sets the stage for a team of superheroes well-known to the general public.
Superman: A Team Different from the Justice League
Expected for Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the Superman film will mark the debut of the DC Universe in theaters, several months after the inaugural animated series Creature Commandos, written by James Gunn and released on Max in December 2024. The film is highly anticipated by superhero fans, and for good reason! In addition to being the first film in a new expanded universe, Superman is written and directed by James Gunn, whose work on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad film, and Peacemaker series has established him as one of the best directors specializing in the superhero genre.
With less than two months to go until the film's release, James Gunn and Warner Bros. Discovery have finally unveiled the second trailer for Superman. A particularly effective trailer, focusing less on humor than on action, and some of the shots and camera movements promise a very attractive film. Particularly fond of team-up films, James Gunn has included several well-known superheroes from the DC Comics stable in his feature film, including Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho and Mister Terrific.
It would seem, however, that these superheroes will not only be part of the feature film, but will also serve to announce the upcoming arrival of another superhero team: the Justice League International. First appearing in the comic book Justice League #1, this superhero team, distinct from the Justice League of America and the Justice Society of America, is notably characterized by its earthly adventures with a lighthearted tone, in perfect harmony with James Gunn's style.
What makes us think of the presence of the Justice League International in the movie Superman? In one shot of the trailer, we can see Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific wearing a costume on which we can see the logo of LordTech, a company founded by Maxwell Lord (played on screen by Sean Gunn, James Gunn's brother), known in particular for sponsoring the JLI. Let's also note that in the first trailer for season 2 of Peacemaker, we can see Christopher Smith (John Cena) being interrogated by Guy Gardner, Maxwell Lord, and Hawgirl, proof that these characters are related.
It therefore seems certain that the Superman film will at least lay the foundations for Justice League International. The film will therefore stand out from the DC Extended Universe, whose Justice League had struck viewers with its much darker tone, particularly in the Snyder Cut.
