Nintendo will "monitor and record" your interactions with other players via the GameChat service. Some users fear abuse and data security issues.
During the Switch 2 presentation, Nintendo focused on a brand new feature: GameChat. This serves as a means of voice communication between players, even if they are not on the same game, and allows you to share your screen with other participants. It is a kind of Discord integrated directly into the Switch system, free at first (until March 31, 2026), then requiring a Nintendo Switch Online subscription thereafter.
As spotted by Nintendo Everything, Big N has updated its privacy policy to prepare for the launch of GameChat. And the changes being made are not pleasing many players, who fear being spied on by the manufacturer and publisher.
Nintendo will monitor Switch 2 players who use GameChat
“Our services may allow you to create, upload, or share content such as text, images, audio, videos, your username and icon, or other content you create or license. With your consent and in order to enforce our terms, we may also monitor and record your video and audio interactions with other users,” reads Nintendo’s new privacy policy.
The words “monitor and record” caused a reaction from some in the community, but it was to be expected that Nintendo would announce such measures. The brand has built its reputation on a friendly, family-friendly atmosphere, and we know that voice chats can quickly go off the rails. By retaining communications and allowing access to them in the event of a report, the company will be able to respond to inappropriate behavior.
Nintendo will, however, need to reassure its audience by guaranteeing strict security and confidentiality conditions. The data collected must be effectively protected from external threats, but also not be accessible to just anyone at any time within Nintendo itself, or to the service providers responsible for regulating GameChat.
