The Galaxy S25 Edge will have a little something extra for its solidity

The Galaxy S25 Edge will have a little something extra for its solidity

The Galaxy S25 Edge will be officially presented to the public in detail at a dedicated event on May 13, 2025. As a reminder, its existence was "teased" at the beginning of the year at the launch of the Galaxy S25, then we were able to glimpse it in the corridors of MWC 2025. But its technical specifications, despite having been leaked numerous times, have not yet been officially announced.

To wait until May 13 and build up the excitement, Samsung is using the good old technique of distilling juicy information before the launch. In a press release, the company confirmed that the Galaxy S25 Edge will be equipped with a new protective glass, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2. This will only be installed on the front of the smartphone. Also designed by Corning, this glass naturally focuses on reducing thickness coupled with the strength we know they provide. The press release also suggests that Samsung may have played a role in the design of this new material, likely involved in the development of the new ultra-thin phone.

Why this communication is not insignificant

As its name suggests, "Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 features crystals intricately integrated into its glass matrix, improving the durability and crack-deflecting capabilities of the screen cover", we can read. In addition, this "better resistance" would maintain "high optical transparency". A very important point, as the latest generations of Corning glass have been able to impress with their anti-reflective coating, transforming the outdoor smartphone experience. That being said, no mention of any anti-reflective treatment is made in the press release. It is also impossible to compare the resistance of this glass with previous glasses, since no form of comparison is communicated.

The Galaxy S25 Edge will have a little something extra for its solidity

The question of the robustness of these new ultra-thin smartphones is obviously very strategic, given that any buyer getting their hands on a device under 6 mm will necessarily worry about the lifespan of their device and its ability to withstand knocks. A dedicated glass is therefore a very important element in the manufacturer's communication.

A test for Samsung

Competitors like OnePlus have made a specialty of teasing features before launch, but the Korean company is less accustomed to this. It must also be said that the launch of the Galaxy S25 Edge comes completely outside of Samsung's usual launch cycle. Traditionally, the brand organizes two big events, its famous Unpacked, at the beginning of each semester.

This launch therefore has all the trappings of an important test for the giant: the timing is new, as is the product type. Samsung is likely looking to test the market, while also taking its biggest rival, Apple, by surprise, which is also expected to release an ultra-thin smartphone in September, the iPhone 17 Air.
