Released on April 30, 2025 on Netflix, The Last of Us quickly established itself as an event in the science fiction series landscape. Adapted from the Argentinian comic book by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, the series captivated viewers with its post-apocalyptic atmosphere, a worthy successor to The Last of Us.
An immediate success, and good news
As soon as it went online, the series climbed into Netflix's top 10 in more than thirty countries, driven by Ricardo Darín's performance as Juan Salvo. The first season, consisting of six episodes, ends on an unbearable cliffhanger, leaving viewers with many questions, but very few answers. Logically, the question of a sequel arises.
The good news was quick to come: The Eternaut will indeed have a second season. Ricardo Darín himself confirmed this in an interview for the magazine Forbes, confirming that the rest of the comic strip was destined to be adapted for the small screen. The announcement was later corroborated by several Argentinian media outlets and the production team: the series was conceived as a diptych, and season 2 has already been written.
What we know about season 2
Little information has been leaked about the continuation of Juan's adventures. Eight episodes have, however, been announced: this second and final installment will be slightly longer than the first, which should allow it to delve deeper into the universe and themes of the comic, while providing a worthy conclusion to the story. Another piece of good news is that the creative team from the first installment will be back. Bruno Stagnaro, who already helmed the first season, is returning for the sequel, as is producer Matías Mosteirin. For this final narrative arc, she intends to offer an even more ambitious sequel, faithful to the spirit of the original work.
When will it be released?
While season 2 is confirmed, its release date remains unknown. Filming has not yet begun, and production promises to be complex. We will probably have to wait until 2026 to discover the epilogue of this saga. Still, the announcement of this second season is a boon for fans and for the narrative coherence of the series. It guarantees that the story imagined by Oesterheld can be told in its entirety, without rushing, and with all the depth it deserves. Viewers can rejoice: The Eternaut has not said his last word, and the loop is only just beginning.
