It's been three years since God of War Ragnarok was released, thus bringing Kratos' Nordic adventures to a close. Since then, with the exception of the Valhalla expansion released for the latter, the teams at Santa Monica Studios have remained particularly discreet about their future projects. And while fans have been demanding a remaster of the first three God of War installments, it appears more and more that the studio is working on a new IP. A license that could radically change the adventures of the Greek god.
Santa Monica working on the post-God of War?
Although Santa Monica has never made any concrete statements on the subject, the studio has been hinting at its desire to work on a new IP for several years now. Cory Barlog, director of God of War 2 and God of War (2018), has never hidden his desire to work on a game set in space. And indeed, it is not impossible that this is currently the case if we believe multiple job offers published recently.
So no, at this stage, we have no certainty that it will indeed be a science fiction game. However, several developer profiles have already mentioned on LinkedIn the fact that they are working on a new franchise. In addition, Santa Monica regularly publishes new job offers whose content can give an idea of what to expect. One of the latest? That of a Cinematic Artist who would have "experience in martial arts, acting, or dance.".
A description that seems to fit rather poorly with the God of War universe, and which could tease a very different combat system for this new project. Especially since, if we refer to previous offers published before, combat should remain an essential component of the game. Moreover, those who watched the Raising Kratos documentary know that Santa Monica would not be at its first attempt. Because before the God of War soft reboot saw the light of day, the studio was working on another project called "Internal-7", which was unfortunately canceled.
A first in 20 years
Note that if this new IP ends up seeing the light of day, it will be the studio's first new franchise to be released in the space of two decades. Because yes, since the launch of God of War in 2005, Santa Monica has only released projects related to Kratos. Suffice to say, then, that it would be particularly interesting for us to see them shine in other universes, with potentially very different gameplay. Now we just have to wait for this mysterious project to finally be revealed to find out.
