Android updates are no longer limited to background adjustments. They also transform the appearance and daily interactions on smartphones. Among the new features of Android 16, one feature particularly attracts attention: the display of live information on the screen, without opening an app. And this time, it won't be reserved for Google models.

Dubbed Live Updates, this new feature is appearing on Pixel phones via the second beta version of Android 16. But Google has confirmed that it will also arrive on Samsung, OnePlus, vivo and Xiaomi devices. Each manufacturer plans to integrate it in its own way into its Android overlay, with a presentation adapted to its own interface. This shows that the company is now looking to standardize key system functions beyond its own models.

Live Updates displays real-time information on the screen without opening an app

Live Updates allows you to display the live progress of certain services such as food deliveries, ride-hailing trips, or navigation. This information appears directly on the lock screen or home screen, without having to open the relevant apps. In concrete terms, you will be able to see on your screen that your pizza is arriving in ten minutes, that your Uber is getting two blocks closer, or that your current route has changed due to a traffic jam. Android will go further than Apple by allowing immediate actions from the notification: call the driver, send a message, or add a tip, all without leaving the main screen. Each manufacturer will adopt its own version of Live Updates. Samsung plans to integrate it into its Now Bar in the future One UI 8 interface, which has already been partially unveiled in test versions. OnePlus will use its Live Alerts system introduced with Oxygen OS 15, which is reminiscent of how the live island works on iPhones. For their part, vivo and Xiaomi plan to include the feature in their custom overlays. At this stage, live display is mainly for delivery, transport and navigation applications, but Google plans to expand compatibility to other types of uses such as live sports or package tracking. The rollout will be gradual starting in the second half of 2025, depending on the brand and region.
