WearOS 6 increases the battery life of your smartwatch, here's how much

Google is taking advantage of Google I/O to unveil WearOS 6. The new operating system for smartwatches adopts the new Material 3 Expressive design language. But what we really remember is that it significantly increases the battery life of smartwatches... at least according to the company.

WearOS 6 increases the battery life of your smartwatch, here's how much

Google unveiled WearOS 6 at its Google I/O developer conference. The new operating system for smartwatches introduces the new Material 3 Expressive design language as well as a few new features. Android 16 should be the first operating system from the company to feature this new look – for greater visual unity, while giving a touch of modernity to the interface.

By unveiling WearOS 6, the company rolled out the adaptation of these new design principles. Material 3 Expressive is thus “fully optimized for round screens.” It should finally introduce dynamic themes on watches that change colors automatically. Google has taken care to maximize the use of space on these screen formats, which are ultimately quite rare across the range of platforms compatible with a variant of the Android operating system.

WearOS 6 promises to significantly improve the battery life of your smartwatch

The result remains “iconic,” to use the company’s words. All with new ways to navigate the interface more efficiently. Scrolling through lists is smoother, and there are some interesting new concepts for visualizing progress within a list or task. Playback controls are also improved. And the various watch faces will all be able to display photos you select.

Beyond the design, it's the optimizations implemented by Google that stand out. The system is lighter in terms of resource usage and is packed with optimizations to reduce power consumption. As a direct consequence, you'll have a good reason to upgrade to WearOS 6 if your watch is compatible. Indeed, Google is promising 10% more battery life right from the start.

Developers can now get their hands on the very first beta of WearOS 6 Developer Preview. The official release of the stable version doesn't yet have a specific date. Google simply promises an arrival "later this year."
