The PS5 Pro may have caused a lot of ink to flow when it was announced and even more so since its release, but it remains the most powerful home console on the market. Whether you've adopted it or you hate it, it's an important link in the PlayStation range for the simple reason that it should serve as a veritable laboratory for the cutting-edge technologies that will be found in other upcoming consoles like the PS6. This is already the case in fact with the famous PSSR which allows the PS5 Pro to offer above-the-lot visuals with top-notch fluidity. And it's precisely this feature that could change everything in the future, since Sony is already preparing the next step.
The PSSR of the PS5 Pro is reportedly on the table of operations
Updates and other upgrades are now part of every gamer's daily life. Long gone are the days when games couldn't be improved, or when consoles were released as is, with their strengths and flaws. Now, everything can be improved, even recent technologies like that of the PS5 Pro. While it's still too early to talk about upcoming updates, we know that this in-house DLSS is malleable and still very young. A powerful technology that can improve graphics, fluidity, or both with the help of AI.
Although this is stating the obvious, information has just been shared by the sometimes well-informed YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead (via PSU). According to him, Sony is working on improving its PSSR to the point of naming the new version: PSSR 2, like Nvidia does with its DLSS. This new feature would aim to significantly improve the capabilities of PlayStation consoles, the PS5 Pro but also certainly the PS6 in the not-too-distant future. The PSSR 2 could thus target 4K at 120 fps, but also go even further with other possible resolutions such as 8k and even the lowest in 1440p and 1080p. The goal would be to improve the quality of upscaling by AI for better rendering while providing higher stability. An Ultra Performance mode would be considered.
REAL improvements for the console and the future PS6?
Better yet, Sony is reportedly using its PSSR to improve the native TAA (antialing) of PlayStation consoles with the aim of improving graphics without directly using PSSR. As a reminder, while this feature allows the PS5 Pro to shine, it is also the source of several bugs in a handful of games. Some players are even going so far as to shun it for the moment. A native improvement of the console's technologies could be a good alternative.
The PS5 Pro has in any case not developed its full potential and future updates could well change everything for players in this regard. At the same time, it is the PS6 that will emerge as the big winner since everything that is learned and applied now will inevitably have repercussions on the next generation of consoles. Machines that we already hope will be very powerful and that could well surprise us according to the first predictions of several professionals.
