Microsoft has just confirmed news that may make many people grind their teeth. Indeed, it is now clear that the prices of the Xbox Series X and Series S are increasing worldwide. And that's not all: controllers and accessories are also increasing.
Justified price increases?
In fact, Microsoft is announcing this price increase in a particularly tense global context. Indeed, it is marked by persistent inflation, customs surcharges imposed by the United States, sharply rising development costs, and economic instability accentuated by international tensions.
Thus, the Xbox Series X sees its price increase by $100 in the United States, going from $499.99 to $599.99. The Series S is not spared: +$80, or now $429.99. It's the same in Europe. The Xbox Series X now costs €599.99. The Series S, for its part, is listed at €349.99.
Controllers and accessories are also affected. Microsoft is applying increases of up to €20 extra.
And what about games?
For now, game prices are not changing. But Microsoft warns that starting around the holiday season, some new titles could be sold for €79.99.
This case is reminiscent of Mario Kart World, which was released at €79.99. At the time of its release, the game sparked much debate, as the price was deemed too high by a large part of the community. What seemed to be an exception at the time has since become a new trend. Microsoft is now considering setting this same price for its future major titles. In other words, by 2026, AAA games could all cost close to €80. And this amount could become the new standard in the industry.
As an explanation, Microsoft mentioned the customs surcharges in the United States, imposed by Donald Trump, which have increased the import bill. Then, it would be necessary to consider the increase in development costs. In five years, these costs have tripled, not to mention global inflation and exchange rate fluctuations.
Nintendo and Sony in the same vein
It should also be remembered that Sony had already increased the price of the PS5 in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Nintendo, for its part, is preparing to launch its Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. This release is highly anticipated despite this tense climate. And despite criticism of the prices, some experts are predicting a historic launch.
Nevertheless, on social media, reactions are pouring in. Many are expressing their anger. Some are announcing that they will wait for promotions. Others are considering switching to the competition.
The fact is that some gamers feel trapped. Between more expensive consoles, high-priced accessories, and games costing almost €80, the bill is becoming substantial.
For Microsoft, the tactic is to rely on the loyalty of its fans and the quality of its games. But it's a fairly risky bet, because consumers are more demanding and competition is fierce.
