YouTube Premium is getting (a little) more affordable, but on one condition

YouTube has a new idea to encourage users to subscribe. Google's video platform is currently testing a new offer called "For Two." This new option is in addition to the existing plans: the individual subscription, the family plan (up to 6 people), and the student plan. The price of this duo subscription is set at €19.99 per month. As part of its test, Google is offering a free month to discover its new offer. Its price allows the Mountain View firm to integrate an intermediate formula between the individual formula (12.99 euros per month) and the family offer (23.99 euros per month).

YouTube Premium is getting (a little) more affordable, but on one condition

The main advantage of this offer for two is that it allows two users to enjoy all the benefits of YouTube Premium at a price more affordable than two separate individual subscriptions, or an oversized family offer. For a duo, this represents a significant potential saving over the year. On YouTube's side, this allows you to have a new offer under 20 euros per month and to add another string to your bow to fight against account sharing.

What do you get with this duo subscription?

The "For Two" plan includes exactly the same benefits as other Premium subscriptions. You benefit from:

  • A complete absence of ads on YouTube.
  • The ability to download videos to watch offline.
  • Background playback, even when the app is closed.
  • Full access to the YouTube Music music streaming service.

Who is this offer available for and where?

Like the family offer, the "For Two" plan has certain conditions. Both users must live under the same roof (be part of the same Google family group) and be at least 13 years old. It is therefore ideal for couples or roommates who share a living space.

Please note, however, that this plan is not yet available to everyone. This is a test limited to a few countries, including France, India, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Furthermore, within these countries, the offer is only visible to a random selection of users. It may appear on the homepage and then disappear.

A strategy to push Premium

This launch is part of YouTube's stated desire to convert free users into paying subscribers, notably by making the experience less enjoyable for those using ad blockers. YouTube has made it clear that the optimal experience requires a Premium subscription and cracked down on VPNs last year.

While Premium subscription prices have increased in recent years, this new "For Two" offer offers an interesting compromise. For groups of more than two people, however, the family plan remains the most advantageous per person.

At the same time, YouTube is still exploring other options such as the Premium Lite plan, which is cheaper (5.99 euros/month) but only removes ads from classic videos (not music or Shorts) and does not offer downloading or background playback. This Lite plan is also limited to a few countries.

The duration of the "For Two" plan's test in France and elsewhere has not been specified. Its global expansion will depend on positive user feedback.
