One of the most important filmmakers in American cinema, James Cameron is currently working on the third installment of Avatar, scheduled for release in our theaters next December. At the same time, the star director is working on other equally promising projects, including a dark fantasy film. Let's explain!
James Cameron's new big project
Scheduled for release on December 17, 2025, Avatar: Fire and Ash is likely to be the biggest hit of 2025. Although no official trailer has been released to date, the first revelations and the first images revealed promise an even darker feature film than the previous two. However, we imagine that James Cameron will manage to capture our sense of wonder with new regions of Pandora, enhanced by highly precise staging. While the Avatar saga is set to keep him busy at least until 2031, the director of Terminator and Titanic is also thinking about other horizons than the lush and hostile moon of Polyphemus. A few weeks ago, we learned that James Cameron wanted to adapt the book Ghosts of Hiroshima for the big screen, which recounted the true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi - the only known man to have survived the two nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A film that promises to be immensely controversial, given the tensions surrounding the hibakusha in Japan. On June 2, 2025, James Cameron also announced on his Facebook page through a press release that he has just acquired the adaptation rights to the novel The Devils by English fantasy writer Joe Abercrombie.
The first volume of a trilogy evoking a medieval The Suicide Squad, The Devils was released with great fanfare in May 2025, and has since dominated the top spots of bestseller lists worldwide. In France, the novel is published by Bragelonne. In a Europe on the brink of collapse, ravaged by plague and famine, the Catholic Church fights against the return of cannibalistic Elves. But in this war, the clergy has a secret weapon at its disposal: the Devils, doomed monsters who don't hesitate to cross the line when necessary. In his press release, James Cameron describes the dark fantasy novel as follows:
"How do you describe The Devils? A horror adventure with biting humor? An epic battle between good and evil, where it's often hard to tell one from the other? A twisted and stylish alternative medieval epic, where your best hope for survival lies with the monsters themselves? This is Joe Abercrombie at the top of his game, opening up a whole new world with a delicious cast of characters. The twists and turns come at a breakneck pace, with Joe's acerbic wit and signature style. The Devils highlights his disillusioned vision of human nature, in all its dark and selfish glory, through characters who are decidedly non-human. But, as always, Joe allows glimpses of redemption that make the whole thing poignant. In any case, although he has already revolutionized entertainment cinema several times, James Cameron remains a filmmaker full of ambitions, and does not seem ready to hang up his hat. We are delighted!
