Adobe has finally optimized Photoshop for Android, after bringing its software monster to the iPhone in February. Unlike its iOS counterpart, this Android version is available in beta, but the publisher seems pretty confident in its decision, and all users who wish to do so can download the app from the Play Store. The icing on the cake is that the app offers free access to all its features up to the final version.
An app that has almost everything of its big sister
Photoshop presents itself as a "creative playground," more than a "simple" photo editing app. It's true that it's more complicated to be as productive in front of the small screen of a smartphone as in front of a traditional computer. This doesn't mean being limited: the mobile app contains retouching tools for marks and spots, for correcting lighting, adjusting colors and brightness, removing unwanted elements, etc.
It also includes more traditional features like masks, layers, and selection tools. And of course, how can we avoid it? Generative AI can also fill empty spaces in a photo or add an object based on a text query. Edited images can be exported in JPG, PNG, TIF, and PSD formats, allowing them to be retouched in the "desktop" version.
Unlike the iPhone app, the Android version does not (yet) work in tandem with Photoshop on the web, but it is a paid feature on iOS. To use Photoshop on a smartphone, it must be running Android 11 and have at least 6GB of RAM (Adobe recommends 8GB).
