We already have the summer series. A year after the hit Alien: Romulus in theaters, Ridley Scott's fantasy will be hitting the shelves of Disney+. For several years, the American platform has been working on Alien: Earth, a production set on Earth before Ellen Ripley's first encounter with the Xenomorph. Until now, the FX channel had been content to deliver a few cryptic (but very edgy) images. With the release fast approaching, it's finally time to lay our eyes on a real trailer.
As one might expect, the idea is to delve deeper into the story of the heroine played by Sydney Chandler. The actress plays Wendy, the first prototype of a hybrid. Suffering from an illness, the little girl had her consciousness transferred into a synthetic body. The story takes place in 2120, when Earth is divided between cyborgs (humans with biological and artificial parts) and synthetics (humanoid robots with artificial intelligence). Right between the two, Wendy will be confronted with a new form of life. A ship has crashed on Earth and it contains creatures well known to fans of science fiction and horror. When the question of who to send as scouts arises, Wendy and her friends volunteer.
A first for Alien
Under the leadership of Ridley Scott, but with Noah Hawley (Fargo) as producer and creator, Alien: Earth promises some great moments of anguish. But this time, that's not the only thing the story should have to offer. If Romulus had the feel of a return to its roots with a brief exploration of the bowels of an old ship, Earth will have to delve deeper into the mythology over several episodes. When Ridley Scott tried it, the result was far from unanimous. This is nevertheless the first time the franchise has ventured to Earth to tell this fantasized future. A change of format that could greatly benefit the license, especially since Hawley has a solid reputation for reinterpretations and other adaptations.
The screenwriter distinguished himself with his reinterpretation of Fargo in the early 2010s and he also signed one of the best superhero series of recent years with Legion. Never two without three, we can hope that he succeeds in another feat here. To accompany him in this adventure, he calls on Sidney Chandler to play the heroine Wendy. The actress will play opposite Alex Lawther (The End of the F*cking World) and Timothy Olyphant. Essie Davis will also be along for the ride, credited in the role of Dame Silvia. The eight episodes of Alien: Earth will be broadcast from August 12 on Disney+.
