Apple just unveiled iPadOS 26 during WWDC. The iPad gains redesigned multitasking, a Mac-inspired interface, and advanced AI features. This major development brings the tablet even closer to a computer.
Every year, Apple narrows the gap between its mobile devices and computers. The iPad, long positioned between the iPhone and the Mac, continues to break free with its own version of iPadOS. At WWDC 2025, the brand presented a complete overhaul of its systems, including iOS 26, with a spectacular “Liquid Glass” design. This is a significant moment, as the company is introducing the most significant visual changes since iOS 7 this year. In this context, iPadOS 26 pushes the tablet even closer to a true desktop machine. With iPadOS 26, multitasking reaches a new level. It is finally possible to freely resize windows, move them around the screen, or group them via Stage Manager. Apple is also introducing Exposé, a feature well-known to Mac users, which allows you to view all open windows in a single gesture. This new environment aims to offer more intuitive management of open apps, even on multiple external displays. Users can create separate workspaces based on their usage, further enhancing tablet productivity. iPadOS 26 finally lets you open and move multiple apps like on a Mac. The iPad now features a macOS-inspired menu bar, accessible by swiping from the top of the screen. It displays app-specific functions that developers can customize. There are also controls for closing, minimizing, and resizing windows. Another notable new feature is the Preview app, which lets you open, annotate, and edit PDFs or images with Apple Pencil. These additions strengthen the continuity between the Mac and iPad environments.
The new Files app benefits from a redesigned interface with an enhanced list view, customizable folders that can be dragged to the dock. Other additions include local audio/video capture for calls, improved audio management per app, and the first elements of Apple Intelligence. There is also better game integration with the arrival of Game Hub and the Game Overlay, which allows you to adjust your options or chat without leaving the app. The developer beta is available now, with a public release planned for this fall on a wide range of iPads.
