Apple will allow you to trigger your iPhone's camera with your AirPods

Apple will allow you to trigger your iPhone's camera with your AirPods

As expected, Apple took advantage of the WWDC 2025 keynote to announce new features for AirPods. First, Apple unveiled "audio recording updates" aimed at content creators, such as podcasters and singers. The improvements will help record audio with better sound quality, even in the noisiest environments. Apple promises studio-quality recording.

The company also announced "improved call quality" through the earbuds. Apple promises "more natural voice texture and clarity" for calls. These improvements stem in particular from voice isolation, a technology that isolates the voices of the speakers.

Taking a photo with AirPods is soon possible

Above all, Apple will allow you to control your iPhone's camera using your AirPods. To trigger the device remotely, simply press the AirPods stem, which is covered with a touch-sensitive surface. The stem allows you to take a photo or start a video recording on your iPhone or iPad. A second, continuous press on the stem will stop the recording.

The feature promises to be practical for taking photos while keeping your smartphone at a distance, like during traditional group photos. It's also ideal "for users who like to film themselves singing or dancing.". Apple says the feature helps better synchronize "performances with a soundtrack, while recording the video at the same time.".

Which AirPods are affected?

The Californian giant specifies that only AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, and AirPods Pro 2 will be eligible for these features. The new features are available to users who are members of the iOS or iPadOS beta program starting today. To take advantage of them, you will unsurprisingly need to install one of the beta updates, intended for developers. The features will be rolled out to all users during the fall.
