Berserk: Glénat responds to the controversy

You don't mess around with Berserk. This is what the French publisher Glénat, which owns the publishing rights to Kentarō Miura's masterpiece, has just learned the hard way. Four years after the legendary manga artist's tragic death from an aortic dissection, which caused a real stir among fans and the industry alike, Glénat Publishing has decided to spoil readers with the release of a very ambitious Prestige Edition.

This new, luxurious, large-format hardback edition, reminiscent of the collector's edition of volume 41 of Berserk, offers a revised and expanded translation, as well as completely new color pages from the Japanese publisher's archives. Finally, each volume includes two volumes from the standard edition published by Glénat. In short, as you can see, the French company has pulled out all the stops.

However, an error has crept into volume 2 of the Prestige edition, enough to arouse the anger and suspicion of fans. Indeed, an illustration showing Guts holding his gigantic sword with two points (top and bottom) instead of just one has sparked heated discussions on social media. Streamer Loazertie - a notorious fan of Kentarō Miura's work - called out the publisher after noticing this blunder, asking them to guarantee that they hadn't used Artificial Intelligence.

Okay, I feel like I'm going to break everything here. I don't know if anyone has already noticed this, but @Glenat_Manga you're playing a joke on us, I hope? You're not actually using AI for the prestige edition of #Berserk, please reassure me? This is such a SHAME pic.twitter.com/ViXGjrQUSH

In the aftermath, Glénat Manga responded and apologized to readers in a statement, in which the publisher referred to a "totally human error" and assured that it had not "used artificial intelligence." Explaining that the use of AI to "alter an author's work" is contrary to its principles, the comic book publishing house states that "the image in question was retouched during the lettering phase".

Moreover, Glénat has decided to urgently reprint volume 2 of the Prestige edition; customers in possession of the print with the altered image will be able to exchange their copies free of charge" at Glénat's partner bookstores, which will communicate soon on this subject. All's well that ends well! And we can be satisfied to have on the French manga market a publisher so responsive and attentive to its readers' comments.
