It's news that all Malcolm fans have been waiting for: the return of the cult sitcom from the 2000s. Indeed, Disney has announced that the boy genius and his crazy family will be back for 4 new episodes on Disney+. While almost all of the actors have confirmed their attendance, there is one who will not be part of it. This actor is Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey. Bryan Cranston has just explained the reason for his absence.
A return awaited by fans for 20 years
Twenty years after its end of broadcast, the series that marked an entire generation is preparing to return to Disney+. For the occasion, viewers will find Frankie Muniz who will reprise the title role. Now married and father of a daughter, he will be invited by his parents, Hal and Lois, played respectively by the excellent Bryan Cranston and Jan Kaczmarek, to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. And as you can imagine, this family reunion will turn out to be a real chaos as the revealed synopsis specifies.
Fans will also be pleased to see Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield back as Francis and Resse, Malcolm's older brothers. In addition, there will be new faces to discover with Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae who will play Jamie and Kelly, the last two of the siblings, as well as Keely Karsten who will play Leah, the main character's daughter, and Kian Madeira who will take on the role of Tristan, Malcolm's wife. Finally, the public will discover Caleb Ellsworth-Clark who will succeed Erik Per Sullivan in the role of Dewey. The original actor did not want to take part in this reunion because he has been away from the sets since the series ended.
Malcolm's genius is not who we thought he was
Recently, Bryan Cranston gave an interview in which he promised fans that his character of Hal would remain true to himself, despite the 20 years that have passed.
Today, The Breaking Bad star, who appeared on Dana Carvey and David Space's Fly on the Wall podcast, has just revealed the reason for the original Dewey actor's absence: I talked to Erik and I said, 'Hey, we have the show! It's coming back.' He said, 'Oh, that's fantastic!' And I said, 'Yeah, we can't wait to see you again.' He said, 'Oh, no, no, I don't want to do it. But it's fantastic that you're doing it.
And to explain that the actor is going to Harvard University:
He's really very intelligent and I think he's doing his master's degree at Harvard. He said, 'Oh my God, no, I haven't acted since I was 9. So I'm not interested.'
Ultimately, the boy genius wasn't necessarily Malcolm! For now, we don't know when the Malcolm revival will air.
