Canal+ changes channel on TNT: how to find the encrypted channel with the new numbering?

This is a turning point in the history of French television. Since its creation in 1984, Canal+ has been inseparable from Channel 4 on DTT. But the numbering reform, which came into effect on June 6, 2025, now requires viewers to dial channel 40 to find the encrypted channel. Behind this simple number change lies a profound reorganization of the television spectrum, decided by the authorities to optimize the available space and prepare for the arrival of new players.

This overhaul does not only concern Canal+, but the entire DTT package, both free and paid. Some channels are disappearing, others are appearing or changing positions. For Canal+, this move is both a logistical challenge and a powerful symbol: it involves breaking with tradition while adapting to the new technological and competitive landscape.

What are the consequences for subscribers?

Beyond the symbolic aspect, this shift has concrete consequences for subscribers. The first major change: the end of DTT broadcasting for several of the group's channels. Canal+, Canal+ Cinéma(s), Canal+ Sport, and Planète+ will no longer be accessible via the aerial. Viewers will now have to use satellite, ADSL/fiber, or internet services to continue enjoying this content. A paradigm shift that could penalize households that do not have access to these technologies or are resistant to the multiplication of subscriptions.

At the same time, DTT is welcoming new channels, such as the generalist T18 (channel 18), while Paris Première is moving to channel 26. In the Canal+ universe, these channels will be accessible on channels 93 and 112 respectively. This reorganization aims to clarify the offer and better segment content, but risks temporarily confusing users.

A gradual deployment

Canal+ anticipated concerns by detailing the transition schedule. On the operators' boxes (Free, Orange, Bouygues, SFR), the new numbering has been effective since June 6. In the Canal+ universe (Devialet Player, Freebox Revolution), the adjustments will take place on June 10, as will the satellite decoders after a short nighttime maintenance.

For most subscribers, no action is required. However, in the event of reception or dialing problems, Canal+ recommends restarting an automatic channel search via the decoder menu. A simple procedure, but essential to find the entire offer.

While the technical transition seems under control, the real challenge will be Canal+'s ability to maintain its position as a reference in a constantly changing media universe.
