Clair Obscur Expedition 33 loses one of its greatest records, players are angry

Released on April 24, 2025, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Game Pass, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 quickly rose to become the year's biggest surprise, setting numerous record-breaking numbers for an AA game developed by the relatively small French studio Sandfall Interactive. Among its most prestigious records is that of the highest-rated game of 2025, which it unfortunately recently lost, even technically falling to third place on the podium, which greatly upsets its many fans.

While we're officially past the first half of the year, 2025 already has no shortage of big titles that could scoop up numerous awards at ceremonies such as The Game Awards. For many, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 occupies a privileged place. A huge achievement from French studio Sandfall Interactive, with excellent J-RPG-style gameplay, sublime art direction and soundtrack, a gripping story and endearing characters, the title has many arguments to be a serious candidate for the GOTY title.

Nearly two months after its release, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 held the first place among the best-rated games of the year, with an overall score of 93 on MetaCritic, surpassing Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (88), then Monster Hunter Wilds (88), Split Fiction (91) and finally Blue Prince (92). Unfortunately for the French studio, its game has now lost its prestigious place, in favor of... Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom in their "Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced" versions, with a score of 93 and 95 respectively on MetaCritic.

The two games released respectively in 2017 and 2023 are still garnering prestigious scores in their paid upgrades for the Nintendo Switch 2. Thanks to a salutary facelift and a few additional features, these new versions of monuments from the first Switch have therefore been given a nice makeover. Many fans of Clair Obscur Expedition 33, however, deplore this, believing that Sandfall Interactive's title still deserves to retain its status as the highest-rated game of the year, as a "true new game", and not a "next-gen" version of games already released.
