Deezer to flag albums containing AI-generated tracks

In the coming weeks, Deezer subscribers will see the emergence of "AI-generated" labels on the covers of albums containing tracks created using automated artificial intelligence tools.

70% of AI song streams come from bots

The French platform explains that more and more AI-generated tracks are being uploaded every day with the aim of generating revenue without any real artistic creation. According to CEO Alexis Lanternier, "the use of AI is not a problem in itself as long as an artist is behind it," but everything changes when it comes to fully automated productions used to manipulate recommendation systems and unduly capture royalties.

18% of songs uploaded each day to Deezer are now entirely generated by AI, according to a tool developed internally (it was "only" 10% three months ago). This represents some 20,000 tracks per day, a staggering volume but one that should be put into perspective: these tracks only represent 0.5% of total streams on the platform. And the majority of these streams—70%—come from bot farms to generate artificial streams and pump royalties.

When they are detected by Deezer, AI tracks used for manipulation are excluded from any revenue. But it's a cat-and-mouse game, and the detection tool is updated every day with new synthetic tracks. "We fight AI with AI," summarizes Alexis Lanternier.

The phenomenon is not unique to Deezer, which is sounding the alarm for the entire industry. Record labels are at the forefront of the fight against the unauthorized exploitation of their catalogs by startups like Suno and Udio. Alongside legal action, major labels are also seeking compensation from AI companies.
