Disney+ and Star release date in France
After months of waiting and a launch in November 2019 in the United States and a few countries, such as the Netherlands, the Disney+ service has been available in France since April 7, 2020. Initially, the platform was supposed to be available on March 24, 2020, but the American giant decided to postpone the release of Disney+ at the request of the French government. The coronavirus and teleworking in France took their toll on the SVoD+ service, but only temporarily, as there was ultimately only a 14-day gap between the originally planned date and the final release date.
Since February 23, 2021, Disney+ has been welcoming new programs under the umbrella of the “Star” universe. It includes content from the Fox catalog, among others. More mature and intended for an adult audience, these films and series may be subject to parental controls. If you do not want your child to have access to them, simply set a PIN code when you first connect to the platform.
Note that Disney also offers certain films in “IMAX Enhanced” quality for free. This particular format enlarges the image frame, as if you were in an IMAX theater. In addition, Disney+ has added DTS sound to IMAX-compatible Marvel films starting in 2023, for even more immersive sound.
As of February 2024, the platform had a total of 149.6 million subscribers worldwide. It is still far behind Netflix with its 260 million users, or Amazon Prime Video with its 200 million customers.

How much does the Disney+ subscription cost?
The streaming service previously cost €8.99/month or €89.90/year (i.e. a cost price of €7.50/month), whether on the web, on smartphones, on tablets or via OTT. However, these prices have changed since autumn 2023, with the arrival of two new plans, one of which includes advertising. Around mid-October 2024, the streaming service saw its prices increase again without compensation.
Currently, Disney+ offers three distinct plans:
- Premium Subscription (€13.99/month or €139.90/year): 4K HDR resolution, 4 simultaneous playbacks, downloads for offline playback on up to 10 devices, Dolby Atmos sound on compatible content, no ads
- Standard Subscription (€9.99/month or €99.90/year): resolution up to 1080p Full HD, 2 simultaneous playbacks, downloads for offline playback on up to 10 devices, 5.1 surround sound on compatible content, no ads
- Standard Subscription with ads (€5.99/month): resolution up to 1080p Full HD, 2 simultaneous playbacks, 5.1 surround sound on compatible content
Note that things could change soon regarding ad-free plans. Disney has just hinted that ads could be included in ad-free subscriptions... to a certain extent, at least. These offers may include limited promotional content, such as information about Disney brands, sponsorship messages, or ads during special events or live broadcasts.
Disney+ is also available in the Canal+ Ciné Séries package. Three plans are currently available. Note that prices change regularly depending on promotions.
- Family+ Pack at €31.99 per month. This subscription includes around sixty different thematic channels geared towards children and families. The plan includes a Disney+ subscription. This price then increases to 36.99 euros/month after two years.
- Cine Series+ Pack at 39.99 euros per month. It notably provides access to Disney+, OCS, Netflix and Ciné+. This price then increases to 51.99 euros/month after two years.
- Intégrale+ Pack at 89.90 euros per month. This is the most comprehensive pack, and obviously the most expensive. It includes all Canal+ and Disney+ channels and services. The offer then increases to 99.90 euros/month after two years.
As you can see, subscribers to the Intégrale, Ciné Séries+, and Famille+ offers benefit from access to Disney+ at no additional cost. Canal+ is offering a price reduction over the two-year commitment. Note that for each pack, there is a one-year commitment plan and a no-commitment (100% digital) subscription.
Finally, there are rumors that Disney+ could launch FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television), a streaming method that is much closer to television. The principle is to broadcast content continuously on a dedicated channel with ad breaks. The first Disney+ channels would be centered around the Star Wars and Marvel universes.
The end of account sharing confirmed
Disney, like Netflix, was considering ending account sharing. The company with the big ears began testing in India in July 2023. In an interview with CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Iger then confirmed that the ban on account sharing will be generalized in September 2024. Other anticipated tests are being conducted in several countries starting in June.
In addition, the Disney executive clarified the contours of the end of account sharing. Concretely, Disney is adopting a strategy similar to Netflix's: users will be able to add one or more people outside their household to their account in exchange for an additional charge on their bill. We know that at launch, the option is limited to a single user outside their household and costs a different price depending on the account holder's plan. Prices in euros have not yet been announced.

What movies, series, and cartoons are available on Disney+?
As for the catalog, Disney+ can count on its Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars franchises and content from National Geographic. Avatar (thanks to the acquisition of 21st Century Fox), Frozen, the entire Simpsons, The Lion King, and many others are offered on the platform. The list of available movies, series, and cartoons is known, but it's far too long to offer it to you here (it's more than 25 pages). However, don't hesitate to frequently consult our selections dedicated to the new Disney+ releases of the weekend and those of the current month.

Note that in March 2022, Disney confirmed the arrival in its series catalog Marvel Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders on Disney+. Until now, these series belonged to Netflix, but with Disney's acquisition of the House of Ideas, it was only a matter of time before these different shows arrived on Disney+.
With such regular releases of new Marvel series (and of varying quality), fans didn't have time to breathe, and this ultimately backfired on Disney, which lost millions of subscribers, forcing the company to lay off 7,000 employees. Fortunately, the company seems to have realized its mistake, and will therefore slow down. Disney should therefore release fewer Marvel series in the future.
A focus on upcoming Marvel series in 2024 and beyond
Nevertheless, other Marvel series will obviously see the light of day soon. We are thinking, for example, of Agatha, the show centered on the witch Agatha Harkness, seen in particular in Wandavision. We already know that Kathryn Hahn will be reprising her role. The series is expected to premiere in fall 2024.
The Ironheart series has also been confirmed by Disney. The show will tell the story of Riri Williams, a brilliant young student destined to take up the mantle of Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the Marvel Universe. The character has already been introduced to the MCU in the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the second installment of the franchise. No release date has yet been set.
A reboot of the cult Netflix series Daredevil is also set to see the light of day. Called Daredevil Born Again, the show will mark the return of Charlie Cox as the defender of Hell's Kitchen. Vincent d'Onofrio will also return as Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin. Other members of the original cast have been announced, such as Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page) and Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle aka The Punisher). The release date is scheduled for 2025 without further details.

Additionally, subscribers can also watch the series The Mandalorian from director Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Jungle Book), which takes place in the Star Wars universe. In total, the show now has three seasons, and a film centered on Mando and Grogu is even coming to theaters soon!
Animation fans can also enjoy the excellent series Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which directly follows the legendary Clone Wars series. It follows a troop of elite clones, Clone Force 99, shortly after the broadcast of Order 66. Having been genetically modified at birth, these exceptional soldiers will not answer the Emperor's call to assassinate all the Jedi. Three seasons are already available.
The Book of Boba Fett, a spin-off centered on the famous bounty hunter, is also available on the platform. Set on Tatooine, it reveals how Boba Fett became the crime lord of Luke and Anadin Skywalker's home planet. And to top it all off, the series features the return of strong characters from previous Star Wars series, led by The Mandalorian.
In June 2024, subscribers will also be able to discover Star Wars: The Acolyte. This series, starring Cary Ann Moss (Matrix) and Lee Jung-Jae (Squid Game), will take place in a period never before seen on screen: the High Republic.

In total, there are more than 7,500 series episodes and more than 500 films on Disney+. The big-eared company has also made a habit of offering its latest productions on the platform, such as Encanto and Red Alert.
To this already substantial catalog, we must add the Star category, which offers more adult content. More than 41 series are available, including 24, Alias, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Family Guy, Scandal, Sleepy Hollow and Sons of Anarchy. On the film side, we find famous sagas such as Die Hard, Alien, Kingsman, The Maze Runner, etc. Feel free to take a look at our article dedicated to the Star catalog for more details.
Some films and series are nevertheless censored or edited. In addition, following licensing agreements with competitors, some films may be removed from the catalog, as has been the case in the United States. Feature films like What a Dog's Life! (1959), Garfield 2 (2006), Pirates of the Caribbean, Dr. Doolittle, and Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone (1992) are no longer available. As some internet users have noted, it should also be noted that the versions of films available on Disney+ may have been slightly censored when they show scenes of nudity, in particular. The service is also available on Samsung Smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, computers, Roku, Fire TV, and various consoles: Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5. It can also be enjoyed on certain TV boxes from operators such as the Bbox Miami, Freebox Pop, and Mini 4K. The platform is also compatible with Google Chromecast and Android TV. Finally, since October 2021, you can also enjoy an application dedicated to Windows 10 and Windows 11, an application downloadable from the Microsoft Store.
To summarize, here is the list of devices compatible with Disney+:
- App Store (iPhone, iPad)
- Google Play Store (Android smartphones and tablets)
- Microsoft Store (PC running Windows 10 and Windows 11)
- Freebox Pop, mini 4K
- Bbox

- Android TV / Google TV
- Apple TV
- Amazon Fire TV
- LG connected TVs
- TV Samsung connected devices
- Chromecast
- PS5, PS4
- Xbox Series (X,S), Xbox One
- Roku devices
Please note, however, that some versions of the application do not allow you to watch your content in 4K HDR. This is particularly the case for the PS4 and Xbox One applications, which only offer 1080p. Until now, this was also the case on the PS5, users having to make do with the native PS4 application.
However, since Wednesday, October 5, 2022, Disney+ offers 4K HDR on PS5 thanks to a brand new native application. Good news for all owners of Sony's latest console. To take advantage of the service as quickly as possible, we recommend reading our tutorial for installing Disney+ on all your devices.
As previously explained, Disney+ intends to end account sharing in the near future. But for the moment, the platform does allow you to share your subscription with your loved ones, up to 4 people.
You therefore have the possibility of using up to 4 devices at the same time. Since November 2023, these 4 devices will only be available via the Premium subscription. In addition, Disney+ allows the creation of up to 7 profiles.
While Disney+ has not yet started its hunt for “deadbeat payers” by preventing account sharing, the service is nonetheless removing some user-friendly features. Disney has removed the GroupWatch tool from its streaming platform. So goodbye to synchronized viewing sessions with your loved ones and all the live exchanges that made it feel like you were having a shared experience, even from a distance.
