The video game industry is a ruthless environment. While a large number of games are lucky enough to see the light of day on a daily basis, this is unfortunately not the case for many others, which are sometimes canceled behind the scenes before even being officially announced. The American publisher Wizards of the Coast proved this to us a few years ago, by confirming the abandonment of several projects in development. And among them would be a Dungeons & Dragons game designed by Hidden Path, images of which have now leaked.
Images of a canceled Dungeons & Dragons game resurface
Indeed, a video of nearly eight minutes recently appeared on the web, revealing gameplay of this famous third-person RPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. It includes several minutes of combat, a glimpse of the open world and its environments, several cutscenes, exploration phases, and finally a stealth sequence. All of these elements, at first glance, could suggest that the game's development was relatively well advanced.
Of course, as it stands, it remains impossible to determine what stage of development this Dungeons & Dragons game was at at the time of its cancellation. However, given the images presented, there is no doubt that the Hidden Path title would have appealed to a certain audience, and in particular to fans of third-person RPGs. Especially after the colossal success of Baldur's Gate 3 in 2023, which largely contributed to putting the Dungeons & Dragons universe back in the spotlight in the eyes of the general public.
Mystery Project
Now, the fact is that a great mystery still surrounds this project. Because while Jason Schreier assured in 2023 that the Hidden Path RPG was among the titles canceled by Wizards of the Coast, the studio firmly denied the information by indicating that it was still working on a Dungeons & Dragons game. A game that, to this day, we still haven't heard anything about since. In fact, are these images actually from a game that was canceled several years ago, or from a title that is currently in development? The question arises...
