Electric bike: Bosch increases the power of all its motors and boosts its app

Electric bike: Bosch increases the power of all its motors and boosts its app

A few hours before the opening of Euroboke, Europe's largest bicycle trade show, Bosch didn't just announce a new motor for its e-bikes... it also updated almost all of its models with one motto in mind: more power. The race for power, which began several months ago with the arrival of DJI on the electric bike market, shows no signs of slowing down. A true benchmark in the sector, Bosch responded for the first time in the spring by unveiling an update capable of releasing additional power to its flagship engine, the Performance Line CX.

Two months later, the entire catalog has been shaken up. This time, it's not a software update, but rather new versions of almost all of the manufacturer's engines. From the Cargo Line (dedicated to electric cargo bikes) to the Performance Speed (specialized for Speedbikes), not forgetting the mid-range benchmark engine, the Performance Line, all these engines have been given new versions, stamped 2025, but above all more torquey and more powerful.

Finally, we must also add the presentation of a brand new engine, the Performance Line PX dedicated to touring bikes, but which could actually be suitable for many other types of e-bikes.

From cargo to city bike: in search of the perfect torque

Let's start with the Cargo Line, the engine dedicated to cargo bikes, whether longtails, two-wheelers or three-wheelers. In its new version, the Cargo Line motor increases to 100 Nm of torque and 750 W of peak power, for 400% assistance. These characteristics place it on par with the Performance Line CX, the manufacturer's best motor, and for good reason: it's actually the same power unit that would have had some specific settings and adequate software processing. The 2.8 kg assembly should equip the new electric cargo bikes from this summer, it also promises to be slightly quieter than its predecessor, which is not to displease us.

The characteristics are absolutely identical on the Performance Line Speed motor side. This motor capable of assistance up to 45 km/h is designed for Speedbikes and is not very common in France. Here again, Bosch would not have been satisfied with a simple copy-and-paste of hardware. The accessory manufacturer claims to have modified the behavior of this motor so that it offers more immediacy in the pedaling response as well as less resistance.

Finally, the incarnation of the mid-range, the Performance Line, is also evolving. Based on a new platform, like its big brother the Performance Line PX, it is slightly lighter (2.8 kg) and offers 75 Nm of torque for 600 W of power and 340% assistance.

Alongside these hardware updates, Bosch is also announcing a software update for its small motor, the Performance Line SX, which we were able to try out a few months ago. Here again the recipe is the same: we go from 55 Nm to 60 Nm of torque with a power of 600 W and an assistance of 400% (compared to 340% previously).

New software on Flow

Among the other new products announced at this Eurobike, Bosch also includes a new battery designed to push the PowerTube 500 Wh into retirement. The new battery pack can pack some 540 Wh into the same space. The new model is logically called the PowerTube 540.

Finally, Bosch hasn't forgotten about software. While summer should be a good time for updates to the CX motors, it will also bring the Battery Lock function. This "digital" anti-theft device, which disables the battery, was presented at CES. But it doesn't come alone. Bosch also offers a garage function that allows you to link up to six different bikes to your account. Let's also add that navigation now has a 3D display.

Finally, an option that could be very useful is also coming: e-bike sharing. It will now be possible to invite up to five people to use the bike, which should facilitate multi-person use, especially in the case of a family cargo bike. The only problem, and it's not insignificant, is that Bosch has chosen to make these options chargeable. More specifically, the garage and e-bike sharing, like Battery Lock, require a subscription to Flow+, the premium service of the Flow app. It will cost 39 euros per year for users who want to take advantage of these new features. Also remember that when purchasing a new bike equipped with the Bosch Smart System, Flow+ is free for the first year.
