Fairphone 6 leaks early: new smartphone repairable for €550

The Fairphone 6 is expected to be unveiled sometime next week, and as with any highly anticipated smartphone, rumors are rife to reveal the device, its design, and its technical specifications. In this little game, WinFuture wins the prize by unpacking just about everything you need to know about the device, starting with its price: €549.

Ethics in spare parts

For this price, you'll get a mid-range smartphone with some pretty interesting specs: a 6.31-inch P-OLED screen with a refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz, a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chip, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage (and up to 2TB with a microSD), a 4,415mAh battery with 33W fast charging, and a fingerprint reader integrated into the power button.

The European sustainability label—as has been the norm since June 20—indicates that the battery can withstand at least 1,000 charge cycles. The advertised battery life is just over 53 hours. The smartphone is also IP55 certified, meaning it is resistant to dust and water splashes, but is not completely waterproof.

But a Fairphone isn't just a smartphone. It's also, and above all, a device that can be repaired by the user. The design has evolved with a two-part, interchangeable rear shell that can be combined in a variety of colors (black, green, and white). Screws allow the lower back to be easily removed. A large side switch, whose exact function remains unknown, also makes its appearance.

Several components of the Fairphone 6 can be replaced: battery pack (neither glued nor soldered), camera modules (50 + 13 mp at the back, 32 mp at the front), speaker, USB port... All these elements are replaceable. Moreover, it has received the highest rating of "A" from the new European repairability label. The smartphone will be unveiled on June 25.

Fairphone also promises extended software support, an aspect often overlooked in this price range. The manufacturer promises to offer at least five years of Android updates, with the aim of extending this period further if technical conditions allow. This software longevity is in line with the product's long-term vocation. Rival manufacturers, however, have done at least as well: Google and Samsung promise up to seven years of software support.
