Final Fantasy: A huge surprise for millions of players is coming

Final Fantasy: A huge surprise for millions of players is coming

Final Fantasy fans on Xbox can (perhaps) start to believe it. As the Xbox Showcase approaches, in the heart of the Summer Game Fest, a new rumor is causing a stir online: three flagship games in the franchise could finally be coming to Microsoft consoles. And not just any games.

An announcement that would make noise for Final Fantasy fans

According to several well-informed insiders, including journalist Jez Corden, Final Fantasy 16, FF7 Remake, and FF7 Rebirth are reportedly on their way to Xbox. Yes, the most recent and most anticipated installments in the saga. The very ones that, until now, were reserved for PlayStation players. This wouldn't be a small surprise, given the Final Fantasy franchise's historically strong ties to Sony. Since the first PlayStation, the series has often made the Japanese console its primary home. But things could finally change. This isn't the first rumor on the subject.

For several months, Square Enix has been sending clear signals. The Japanese publisher wants to expand its audience. And to do that, it seems ready to abandon all-exclusives. Some recent titles have already made the move to PC. The next logical step? Xbox.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake has already been available on Steam for a while. And what's surprising is that even the Nintendo Switch 2 is about to welcome it, while no Xbox version has yet been announced. A frustrating situation for Xbox players... but one that could finally be reversed.

Ideal timing for an announcement

All the pieces seem to be in place for a quick announcement on Final Fantasy. The Xbox Showcase will take place on June 8. This is the perfect opportunity for Microsoft to make a big splash and for Square Enix to show off its newfound openness. And why not, as a bonus, a direct integration into Game Pass, as is the Redmond company's current strategy. And this may just be the beginning. Rumors also suggest a Final Fantasy 9 remake is in the works. If the publisher decides to unify the releases across all platforms, it could mark a real turning point for the franchise.
