With the excitement surrounding FF7 Rebirth over, fans have been talking about FF9 Remake lately. Rumor has it that Square Enix is working on a 2D HD remake of the iconic game, similar to the first three Dragon Quest games. So when the Japanese publisher started sharing never-before-seen official character images ahead of the RPG's anniversary, the community went wild. Even more so when PlayStation, its long-standing partner, announced a State of Play on the sidelines of Summer Game Fest 2025. What we tend to forget is that this wasn't the only Final Fantasy game that was supposed to make a comeback.
Final Fantasy Tactics soon to return to PS5
This was the other big rumor surrounding the saga. In addition to a remake of FF9, it was rumored that Square Enix was secretly preparing the return of another beloved game. It's undoubtedly one of the most niche in the eyes of some, and yet, it's one of those that made a lasting impression. Final Fantasy Tactics is undoubtedly the best spin-off of the franchise and also one of the best tactical RPGs of its generation, but not only that. It had been somewhat forgotten, but the famous Nvidia leak of 2021 did mention that a remaster was in the works, and it didn't miss a beat.
Without the unfortunate teaser from Yasumi Matsuno, director and writer of the original game, who retweeted the State of Play announcement before quickly deleting it, or that of Jason Schreier, the surprise would have been intact. But here it is. Final Fantasy Tactics Remastered is indeed a reality. It will be more than just a remastering job with slightly improved graphics, gameplay improvements, and full voice acting. Longtime fans will be able to relive the experience almost as before with the original mode.
