A feature long reserved for paid ChatGPT subscribers is now available for free. Artificial intelligence finally remembers what you've already told it. And that changes a lot of things in the way you use it.

Free ChatGPT finally gets to know you, no more repeating yourself!

For several months, OpenAI has been gradually extending certain advanced functions of ChatGPT to its free users. In April 2025, the Deep Search feature was activated. It allows you to obtain very detailed summaries on complex subjects, with an initial analysis and sources. Today, another major new feature arrives: memory. Until now reserved for Plus or Pro subscribers, this function allows the AI to retain information from one conversation to the next. No need to recall your preferences or rephrase your requests each time.

The free version of ChatGPT, however, only benefits from limited memory. It focuses on recent preferences, such as the desired writing style, a diet to follow, or a preferred language. These elements can be recalled over a few successive exchanges, but are forgotten in the long term. In comparison, the memory of paid accounts retains information for several weeks or months. This is therefore a preview, designed to improve comfort without going as far as the higher versions.

This memory can be activated or deactivated from the Settings of ChatGPT, in the Personalization > Memory section. It is also possible to delete certain memorized data. For those who do not want to leave any trace, the “Temporary Chat” mode is available via the profile menu. It allows you to chat without anything being recorded. In Europe, this feature is not enabled by default: it must be manually authorized for it to work.

Even partial, this memory transforms the way we interact with AI. It allows ChatGPT to become a more coherent assistant, capable of offering better targeted responses based on your recent history. This update is part of a clear strategy from OpenAI: to familiarize free users with its premium features and, perhaps, convince them to upgrade to the paid version, where the possibilities are more advanced.
