This week, during Summer Game Fest 2025, Microsoft held its new presentation with its Xbox Games Showcase. A one-hour show during which the Redmond company was able to give us a very good overview of what awaits us on Xbox in the coming months and next year.
However, there was no mention of Gears of War E-Day, which was announced last year, during Summer Game Fest. Don't panic, the title is well under development and is even progressing well. At the end of the show, Phil Spencer confirmed that the next Gears of War installment would be released next year, for Xbox's 25th anniversary.
Gears of War E-Day: the star of Xbox's 25th anniversary, in 2026?
Gears of War E-Day is the next big game in the Gears of War license. Announced last year, during the Summer Game Fest 2024, the title is now officially expected for 2026, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gears of War license, the 20th anniversary of the Xbox 360, but also the 25th anniversary of the Xbox.
It was at the end of the Xbox Games Showcase this year, when fans were disappointed not to be given a new preview of the game, that Phil Spencer, the boss of Xbox, confirmed the release of the next game in 2026. Developed by The Coalition, the title takes place 14 years before the first Gears of War game and tells the story of the appearance of the first Locusts on Sera. Naturally, this game will once again feature Marcus Fenix, the iconic character from the saga.
Gears of War E-Day will be the next game in the franchise, the first title since Gears 5 in 2019. In the meantime, fans can wait with the remaster Gears of War Reloaded which will kick off the series' 20th anniversary celebrations with a release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 26th. This remaster (of the remake released in 2025 on PC and Xbox One) will allow play in 4K and 60 FPS, with support for 120 FPS for multiplayer as well as progression and cross-play across all platforms. The game will be offered at 39.99 euros and will benefit from a physical release on PS5.
In addition to Gears of War E-Day, Microsoft should offer players a new Forza installment as well as "the return of a classic that has been with us since the beginning" in 2026. For the moment, no more information regarding Forza (Horizon or Motorsport?). As for the classic, many rumors mention the remaster/remake of Halo Combat Evolved which could also be released on PS5.
