Gemini is coming to Google Docs for Android, and it's changing a lot of things

Gemini, Google's AI-powered assistant, continues to make its way into the web giant's apps. After Gmail, it's now Google Docs' turn on Android to benefit from its services. Until now limited to the web version for paid Workspace users, Gemini is now making its debut on mobile. However, the tool isn't accessible to everyone: you must be subscribed to one of Google Workspace's paid plans (Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, or Plus), or have a Gemini Education add-on.

A slimmed-down mobile version of Gemini

In concrete terms, a new symbol in the shape of a sparkling star now appears in the Google Docs app on Android. Simply tap it to bring up a messaging-style panel at the bottom of the screen where you can interact with Gemini. The key features include practical functions such as automatic document summarization, key point extraction, and even answers to specific questions about the displayed content.

The system supports more than 20 languages, including French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Chinese. Google presents it as an assistant capable of saving time in everyday life, whether it's for skimming a long report on the go, asking a quick question before a meeting, or sketching out a draft text after brainstorming.

Be careful, however: while Gemini is making its debut on Android, it does not yet offer all the features of the desktop version. The image generation, writing assistance ("Help me write"), or creation ("Help me create") tools are not yet available on mobile. This first version focuses on understanding and analyzing existing documents.

The feature is currently being rolled out and will first appear for users who have enabled Rapid Release. A wider rollout to so-called "Scheduled" domains is planned for July 2.

Google really wants to integrate Gemini everywhere, on all its platforms. At the same time, the company announced this week new scheduling features in the Gemini app, such as creating reminders or managing a calendar by voice. The idea is really to make Gemini a versatile companion, present everywhere and ready to help at any time.
