God of War: a new game for the 20th anniversary of the license that risks disappointing you

Rumors have been circulating for a while that Sony is preparing something for the 20th anniversary of the God of War license. While the series is expected to return to its roots to take players to where it all began in ancient Greece, this new game could well be different from what you might have imagined.

For the 20th anniversary of God of War, an opus in development

God of War is one of PlayStation's most beloved franchises. After a hiatus, the series featuring Kratos returned in 2018 to evolve in ancient Scandinavia and face the terrible Ragnarök in 2022. A winning return for Santa Monica since the two installments sold 23 and more than 15 million copies respectively. The studio continued to ride the wave of gamers' enthusiasm for the franchise as rumors circulated that the next installment of God of War could take place in Egypt. But last March, it was journalist Jeff Grubb who announced information that excited fans: a new game being prepared in the greatest secrecy to mark the 20th anniversary of the license.

According to him, the game would return to Greece and specified that it was "not a remastered collection" but a "new parallel story project".

The next God of War less ambitious than hoped?

Today, it's a new leak concerning this game that has people talking. Jeff Grubb, along with video game expert Tom Henderson, explains that it would be more of a spin-off than a new main installment. For Tom Henderson, a source considered reliable in the video game world, reveals that the next God of War game will not be what many of us had imagined. Indeed, the expert is talking about a 2.5D episode in the Metroidvania genre and indeed taking place again in ancient Greece.

Hearing a lot of scuttlebutt about the 2.5D/metroidvania game or whatever it will be, yeah. Seems to be much smaller in scale than what I initially thought.

This God of War installment for the license's anniversary therefore seems to be less ambitious than what fans or even the journalist could have expected.

Poll: God of War: will you buy this spin-off in Greece for the 20th anniversary of the license?

For now, nothing has been announced by Sony, but remember that a State of Play will take place this Wednesday, June 4th at 11 p.m. (French time) and it may be that this new game God of War could be unveiled there.
