Unveiled in 2021, the Starline project became Google Beam at Google I/O this year. It is no longer a project, but rather a commercial product (and service), which allows you to speak with a contact as if they were right in front of you, or almost! With the help of cameras and microphones, Beam gives the impression that the person is there despite the screen barrier... and without glasses.
However, it was still impossible to use it outside of Google's labs or those of its partners. That's now a thing of the past: HP has announced the first Google Beam-compatible display, the HP Dimension. This 65-inch monster is equipped with 7 cameras and 12 microphones. Enough to support spatial audio and video, as well as all the essential technologies for Beam.
All this isn't cheap, though. The display costs a whopping $24,999 (!), and HP goes to the trouble of pointing out that the Beam license isn't included (!!). Fortunately, the device is compatible with other video conferencing services like Zoom, Meet, WebEx, and Teams. But obviously, without Beam's 3D...
So, the display dedicated to video calls might be a bit expensive. Especially since it's limited to discussions with a single caller. Group conversations are excluded.
