Google is looking for a change. We know that Android 16 will be accompanied by a graphical overhaul that follows the codes defined by Material 3 Expressive. Behind this name lies a desire to make apps more readable. Those from the Mountain View firm will unsurprisingly adopt the new design, of which they will be a widely visible showcase.

We've already had a few discreet glimpses of it in a beta version of Photos or Gmail, and now it's Messages's turn to show off its future look. The teams at 9to5Google have received a few revealing images. Be careful, this is clearly a test phase. Everything we see here is likely to change more or less drastically before the final interface arrives. So it's best not to expect to see exactly what you see below arrive later.

Here are the first images of the new design of Google Messages

The 3 screenshots below give us a good look at Google Messages version Material 3 Expressive. The overall change in the display seen, among other things, in the upcoming new features of Android 16 is here. Gone are the circles, in come the "pills", those rectangles with rounded edges. This is particularly obvious when you press the “+” to the left of the text input area to bring up options for opening GIFs, the Gallery, and more.

Another notable change is the placement of the search bar below the tabs. A minor modification, but one that will surely require a little time to adapt to avoid accidentally tapping the tabs instead of the bar. For the moment, only the conversations interface displays the new design. We'll have to wait for a complete overhaul of the Messages app. Note that it probably won't arrive at the same time as Android 16, expected this June. Google should roll it out later this year.
