As GTA 6 continues to build momentum, a new rumor has shed intriguing light on the behind-the-scenes development. Several versions of the script were reportedly rejected by publisher Take-Two, leading to a rethink of the project and, according to some sources, the withdrawal of Dan Houser, a leading figure at Rockstar Games.
Series of abandoned scripts for GTA 6
According to a report relayed by Medium, the GTA 6 script had at least three different versions, all of which were abandoned along the way. The first proposed a noir-style plot, with three characters and a more serious atmosphere than usual. The project was reportedly halted at the end of 2016, deemed too dark and far removed from the DNA of the saga.
The second version relied on a more classic duo: a policewoman and a drug dealer's sidekick, described as as unpredictable as Trevor in GTA 5. This scenario reportedly lasted 18 months before being shelved. Finally, a final attempt was reportedly made in 2018 for GTA 6. This time, the policewoman was replaced by a former African-American soldier, fresh out of prison. He too found himself embroiled in crime. This scenario was reportedly canceled in March 2019, coinciding with the retirement of Dan Houser, who would eventually leave Rockstar permanently shortly after.
A long and eventful development
These multiple rewrites would help us better understand why GTA 6 took so long to emerge. Over the years, the project has reportedly undergone several creative shifts, moving from over-ambitious ambition to a more focused formula.
This information echoes old rumors surrounding the famous "Project Americas," which suggested an ultra-ambitious GTA with multiple cities, even multiple continents. Today, we know that the game will ultimately feature two characters, Lucia and Jason, in a more focused setting. For now, none of this has been officially confirmed for GTA 6. The main source, Fravilys, is not recognized in the industry. But the consistency of this information with other past leaks gives it a modicum of credibility.
